Paul
Harris FRGS is a professional photographer who specializes in cultural
documentary worldwide. Originally trained in film processing and exhibition
printing, he has increasingly combined his interest in adventure travel,
remote landscapes and traditional cultures with photography. In 1989 he
returned to college for two years to study documentary photography and
has since produced work for editorial, corporate and charitable clients
worldwide. These include The Sunday Times, San Francisco Examiner (US),
Geographical Magazine, Animan (Switzerland), GEO (Germany), Visa International,
British Airways, Cable & Wireless, The National Trust and Survival
International, Coral Cay Conservation & Earthwatch. His early walking and climbing explorations took him to some of Britain's wild coastal cliffs and subsequently on expeditions to Peru, Nepal, and North America. Since 1990, Paul has documented ventures and cultural identity in Vietnam, Ecuador, Chile, Honduras and Iran, the Steppes of Mongolia and Russia's Far East; trekked through India's Northwest and Northeast frontiers and sailed through the Malay Archipelago. His most recent assignments took him across the mountain Kingdom of Bhutan, through the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan and to the islands of Fiji, Philippines and Zanzibar In 1990, a journey on horseback retracing ancient courier routes across the Steppes of Mongolia resulted in his first book. Subsequent journeys to Russia's Far East, Kyrgyzstan, Chile, Vietnam, The Malay Archipelago, Iran, Niger, Tibet and India's North East Frontier, amongst others, have continued to inspire his work. In 1995, he was awarded the 'Cherry Kearton' medal for photography of "peoples and the natural world" by The Royal Geographical Society of which he is a Fellow. |

His portraits of British Explorers are part of the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Geographical Society of which he is a fellow. He currently writes a regular column for Outdoor Photography magazine.
