"In the Spirit of Pablo Neruda"

Inspiration for a quest comes in many ways; Bruce Chatwin's fascination with Patagonia began at school then was fired up by Darwin's accounts of tribal lives in Tierra del Fuego and finally made into reality by a piece of Brontasaurus skin and his continuing interest in the restlessness of nomadism.

Inspired by the visual themes inherent in the work of Pablo Neruda, we travel through the heart of Southern Chile. Neruda's poems express a Latin American spirit and passion for people, politics, the elemental and the romantic.

Beginning in the tumbledown city of Valparaiso, we venture South through the rainforests of Pumalin, appraise indigenous landrights on the Island of Chiloe, and take the Carretera Austral to the foot of the
Patagonian Icecap.

Riding with Gauchos in Torres del Paine and sailing with Darwin through Tierra del Fuego is a fitting end to the long, thin country of Chile.
