"Caravan to Arakao"
Desert
is considered to be one of the most harsh terrains on this planet. Seemingly
a place of no food,
no water and no life.
The Tuareg people of North Africa have become masters of this environment and their camels have become my favourite animals.
Travelling on foot, by camel and four-wheeldrive, we visit the heart of Western Sahara - the Tuareg nation of Niger. Among the huge sand dunes of the Tenere Desert and Air Mountains, the fiercely proud tribal Tuareg are bridging the gap between a traditional and modern African lifestyle.
The once prolific camel caravans between Agadez and Bilma have dwindled and the prospect of tourism is a reality.
Niger is also home to some of the finest and oldest rock art in Africa and in need of an increasing amount of protection.
